Oleg Fursov made history in Samara as the “mayor without moderation.” He turned his 50th into an event for the whole city: in December 2015, he had two receptions for 500 people apiece. It was said that Fursov’s underlings acquiring provisions for the banquets from Samara’s markets without paying a cent – under the pretext that fruits, vegetables, and all manner of cold cuts were needed for a children’s New Year’s event. The one and only Turetsky’s Choir and Diana Gurtskaya entertained Samara’s elite. The scale of the festivities made an impression on both the city leader’s allies and – perhaps more notably – his opponents. In response to the allegations, Oleg Borisovich confidently called his birthday “a reason to bring the region’s resources together.” So after their rapid ascent, the mayor’s political fortunes just as quickly faded away.
